How I Begin a YA Mystery

Over the years, I've honed my approach to starting these thrilling tales, and today, I'm excited to share my process with you.

Thinking About the Setting

The first piece of the puzzle is the setting. The setting is more than just a backdrop—it's a character in its own right. A well-crafted setting can influence the mood, plot, and even the behavior of my characters. Before I begin writing, I spend considerable time contemplating where the story will unfold.

Immersive Environments

When creating the setting, I ask myself questions like:

  • What makes this place unique?
  • How does the environment affect my characters?
  • Are there any specific landmarks that play a crucial role in the plot?

I can develop a setting that feels alive and integral to the story by answering these questions.

Gathering All Characters at the Beginning

Another key aspect of my approach is introducing all the main characters at the story's beginning. This helps readers familiarize themselves with the cast and understand their dynamics from the start.

Character Introductions

I ensure each character has a distinct voice and presence when bringing them together. Here are some techniques I use:

  • Group Scenes: I often start with a scene where all the characters are present. This could be a school assembly, a town meeting, or a social gathering. This way, readers can glimpse each character's personality and relationships.
  • Dialogue and Actions: I reveal essential traits and hint at possible conflicts or alliances through dialogue and actions. For example, a character's reaction to a seemingly mundane event can foreshadow their role in the mystery.
  • Hints and Clues: Even in these initial scenes, I plant subtle hints and clues that will later become significant. This keeps readers engaged and encourages them to pay close attention to every detail.

By introducing all characters early on, I set the stage for the unfolding mystery and create a foundation for the suspense to build.

If you're a fan of YA mysteries, watch for my next novel, and happy reading!
