The Making of a YA Mystery

Ever wondered what goes into creating the thrilling pages of a YA mystery novel? Join me as I unravel the steps behind writing a YA mystery.

1. The Spark of an Idea

When I'm brainstorming ideas, I ask myself questions like:

  • What if a well-loved character suddenly goes missing?
  • What if a seemingly ordinary object holds a dark secret?
  • What if there is a hidden passage in a familiar setting?

The goal is to find an idea that sparks curiosity and has enough depth to sustain a full-length novel.

2. Crafting the Perfect Setting

Once I have the central idea, I move on to the setting. I consider places that can harbor secrets or have an eerie ambiance. Some of my favorite settings include:

  • A sleepy small town with a dark past
  • An elite boarding school with hidden rooms
  • A bustling city with shadowy alleyways

The setting should complement the mystery and add to the tension, making readers feel part of the unraveling puzzle.

3. Developing the Suspects

No mystery is complete without an array of suspects. Creating compelling and believable suspects is a balancing act that requires careful planning. Each suspect must have a distinct personality, background, and potential motive.

To develop my suspects, I ask myself:

  • Who has the most to gain from the crime?
  • Who seems too obvious but might be a red herring?
  • Who has secretive behavior that might raise suspicions?

Each suspect needs to have layers that the protagonist—and the reader—can peel back as the story progresses.

Writing a YA mystery is an exhilarating process that involves blending creativity with intricate plotting.
